Lesson Overview
• Valentine’s Day puts a center spotlight on love and dating. Romantic relationships can
be complicated and even stressful at times. This youth group lesson highlights one of
the biggest “red flags” that we all need to avoid in our dating lives!
Breakdown
• Main Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:15; Colossians 3:16; James 4:8
• Bottom Line: A lack of spiritual health is a red flag.
Capture: Grab their attention with an illustration.
• Illustration/Story: Share a story about a time you, or someone you knew, tried to
practice “missionary dating.” While it sounds great on paper, it never works out that
way and always ends in compromise and pain.
• Spiritual health is one of the most important parts of our lives as human beings. If we
don’t have a strong relationship with Jesus, it will cause serious problems in life!
Connect: Connect them to God’s word.
• Tension Question: Are you spiritually healthy? It’s a no-brainer that the first big “red
flag” we should avoid in dating relationships starts with our relationship with Jesus.
• Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:15 — We are called as Christians to present ourselves to God
for his approval. Our spiritual health is critical for our lives!
Consider: What does this mean for us today?
• Scripture: Colossians 3:16 — This is a perfect measure to determine if someone is
walking in spiritual health or not. A life that is centered around Jesus and His church!
• The biggest red flag we must see is a lack of spiritual health! As we pursue
relationships with others, the most important relationship in their lives should be a
rich relationship with the Lord in His word!
• The most important relationship in your life is not your dating relationship — it’s your
spiritual relationship with God. When that relationship is prioritized first, your dating
relationships will flourish!
• Pause and ask yourself if you are currently dating or interested in dating someone:
“Does this person sound like what this passage describes?”
• Pursue the right person who pursues Jesus. Avoid the red flag of a lack of spiritual
health in the people you choose to date!
• Bottom Line: A lack of spiritual health is a red flag.
Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?
• Scripture: James 4:8 — Scripture shows us the solution for anyone who is far from
God: draw near to Him!
• For every red flag, we will also point to a strong green flag! If the red flag is a lack of
spiritual health, then a great green flag is someone who pursues Jesus first!
• As we look in Scripture for dating wisdom, the first and most important step begins
with God. Let this be the first thing you examine in a potential dating relationship,
and let it be the first thing you prioritize in being the ideal person for someone else!
• Pursue God, and He will draw near you. Prioritize your relationship with Him, and
every other relationship (dating included) will flourish!
• Application: Pursue God.
Call: How do we respond to the message?
• Altar moment: Dating or not, maybe you haven’t prioritized your relationship with
God. Come to the altar and make Him the priority in your life!
• Small Group Questions:
1. Are you spiritually healthy? How do you measure spiritual health in your own life?
2. Why is a lack of spiritual health a red flag?
3. Why is it important to prioritize our relationship with God more than our dating?
4. What does it mean for you to pursue God this week?
