Lesson Overview
•God is bigger than we could ever comprehend! The “bigness of God” is hard to wrap our mind around, but this youth group lesson discusses the Trinity and how big God really is!
Breakdown
•Main Scripture: 1 Peter 1:1-2; Matthew 3:16-17; Proverbs 3:5
•Bottom Line: God is bigger than we can ever comprehend.
Capture: Grab their attention with an illustration.
•Illustration/Story: Have you ever struggled to understand something? Maybe it was inschool, in a difficult subject, or in life, in a specific situation. It can be discouraging when we don’t understand something! Even if we don’t understand, we trust it is true.
•In the same way, trying to understand God completely is impossible! God reveals His character to us, but it’s difficult to understand who He is at times!
Connect: Connect them to God’s word.
•Tension Question: Do you know who God is? Have you stopped to think about who God is? WhatGod is? Through this series, we’re going to dive deep into an understanding of who God is, specifically, who He is as the Trinity.
•Scripture: 1 Peter 1:1-2 — We see the members of the Trinity as creator (Father),sanctifier (Spirit), and sacrifice (Son).
Consider: What does this mean for us today?
•Scripture: Matthew 3:16-17 — This is one of the first of many places we see the Godhead in His three individual persons.
•Scripture is clear that there is only one God above all other gods. However, we see unique mentions of “God the Father,” “God the Son,” and “God the Holy Spirit.”
•Scripture has outlined that “the Godhead” is comprised of three distinct and individual members that are all equally God. We say phrases like “three in one” —God is not three parts combined. He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is not three — He is one! This is one of the great mysteries of God and exceeds our ability to understand as humans.
•We will deep dive into the individual members of the Trinity over the next three weeks, but one thing is clear: God is far bigger than we could ever understand orcomprehend.
•Bottom Line: God is bigger than we can ever comprehend.
Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?
•Scripture: Proverbs 3:5 — Simply put: we can’t build off of our own understanding, especially when it comes to knowing God.
•God is far above our understanding. The only appropriate response to a triune God is to trust Him! Even when we don’t understand, we trust that God is real and true —even though it can be hard to wrap our minds around it.
•When you have a moment of confusion, respond in trust. Be thankful that you serve a God that is so much higher and greater than your own understanding! I would much rather serve a God that is difficult to comprehend than a god I can completely understand.
•Application: Trust God when you don’t understand.
Call: How do we respond to the message?
•Altar moment: Have peace in the fact that God is unbelievably bigger than we canever understand, and still wants a relationship with you. Believing in Him, even whenwe can’t fully understand Him is what makes up our faith. All we need to do is trust, believe, and obey!
•Small Group Questions:
1. Why is God so difficult to understand?
2. Do you know who God is? How have you learned about Him before through experience?
3. Does it bother you that you’ll never fully understand God? Why or why not?
4. How can you put your trust in God this week, even when you don’t understand?
