Lesson Overview
• Salvation is single-handedly the most important topic in the lives of teenagers. More than anything else, students need to experience salvation with Jesus Christ. This youth group lesson is a clear presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the salvation that He offers us.

Breakdown
• Main Scripture: John 1:50-51; Genesis 28:10-17; John 3:36
• Bottom Line: Jesus is the only way to heaven.

Capture: Grab their attention with an illustration.

• Illustration/Story: Share a story about a time that you locked yourself out of your house or car. Share about how miserable and frustrating the experience was — especially if you had to wait for hours! There’s only one way to remedy this issue: you need the key! You need the car to get you where you’re going, but without the key, you can’t go anywhere.
• Spiritually, we know that there is a gap between God and man. We know and have heard that we need reconciliation, but what does that mean? How do we connect with God when we feel so disconnected from Him?

Connect: Connect them to God’s word.

• Tension Question: Do you feel separated from God? Do you feel like He’s a million miles away — like you are completely distant from Him? There’s only one way to close the gap between you and God, and it’s only through Jesus Christ! He is the key!
• Scripture: John 1:50-51 — Jesus references Himself as a “stairway” or “ladder” between heaven and earth. This is a reference to Jacob’s vision in Genesis 28.

Consider: What does this mean for us today?

• Scripture: Genesis 28:10-17 — This famous passage, also known as “Jacob’s Ladder,” is a revelation of the future Messiah: the one who angels went up and down on from heaven to earth. At this point in the story, Jacob is established in the line of the patriarchal promise that God began with Abraham.
• It is particularly important to understand how God revealed Himself in this vision to Jacob. He showed Himself at the top of a heavenly ladder (or staircase, as the translation would illustrate), speaking down to Jacob.
• Even now, the vision from God has Jesus present all along! He has always been present. He has always been the solution. All of Scripture pointed to our Messiah — the ladder to heaven, that was coming!
• The Jewish people had a rich, deep knowledge of Jacob’s vision and understood the significance of this picture. Jesus boldly said, “I am the fulfillment of Jacob’s vision. I am the bridge to heaven!” Jesus is the fulfillment of all Old Testament prophecy. It’s His story! Jesus is the only way to heaven!
• Bottom Line: Jesus is the only way to heaven.

Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?

• Scripture: John 3:36 — All of Scripture echoes the truth of the Gospel: Jesus is the only way to eternal life!
• As fallen, broken, sinful humans, we are living under the curse of sin. God’s judgment exists towards anything that is sinful! He is a perfect and just God!
• Jesus, however, made a way for us through His death on the cross. Anyone who will believe in Jesus and confess Him as Lord will be saved! Anyone who doesn’t live in obedience to the Son by following Him will never experience eternal life.
• Ask yourself: Have you experienced salvation in Jesus through confessing Him as Lord? Are you walking in obedience to Him? If not, don’t wait. Believe in Jesus!
• Application: Believe in Jesus.

Call: How do we respond to the message?

• Altar moment: Put your faith and trust in Jesus. He is the prophesied Messiah — the ladder who has bridged heaven and earth! Believe in Him and experience eternal life!

• Small Group Questions:
1. Have you experienced “disconnection” from God before? What is it like?
2. Do you feel separated from God? Why or why not? If yes, what caused it?
3. Why is Jesus the only way to heaven?
4. What does it mean to believe in Jesus? Have you made Him your Lord and Savior
