YOUTH GROUP LESSON ON MOTHER'S DAY
Lesson Overview
- We all love our mothers! The job of a mother is a critical role. In this lesson, we see the biblical importance of how we experience God through our relationship with our moms. Teach your students about the importance of motherhood in this lesson designed for Mother’s Day!

- Illustration/Story: We all love our moms! Share a story about a time that your mom went above and beyond to help you feel safe, loved, and cherished. Moms are the unsung heroes of our world. They are so important to our development as men and women.
- Even if you didn’t have an incredible relationship with your mother growing up, there are plenty of people who have probably been like spiritual mothers to you, giving you guidance, love, and support.
- As we celebrate Mother’s Day, maybe you’re thinking, “What can I do for my mother this week?” I believe that Scripture can help us with that!
Connect: Connect them to God’s word.
- Tension Question: Why are mothers so important? We celebrate our moms on Mother’s Day each year, but have we stopped to think how vital they are in our lives?
- Scripture: Proverbs 31:31 — Mothers do a lot. Their hands are always busy doing great things for their families. Scripture highlights the importance of a woman of God in her relationship with her children!
Consider: What does this mean for us today?
- Scripture: Proverbs 1:8-9 — Our mother’s instructions (even when they can feel frustrating) are for our development.
- Maybe you’ve heard the common phrase before: “Mother knows best.” Often, (although we may not want to admit it), this is true!
- Illustration/Story: Share a story about a time that your mother gave you instruction or correction that you disagreed with, only to later find out how right she was!
- Scripture is clear: our mothers' instruction will set us up for success. What a powerful picture the last line of this verse is: “giving you reins to guide your decisions.” Imagine trying to drive without a steering wheel!
- The instructions of our mother are for our benefit and our growth. It connects us to wisdom that helps us obey God fully. Never forget your mother’s instructions!
- Bottom Line: Never forget your mother’s instructions.
Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?
- Scripture: Ephesians 6:1-3 — Wisdom comes from obedience. When we live in obedience to our parents, God is honored!
- It's one thing to listen to your mother’s instructions. It’s another to obey them. If you truly want to enrich your life (and your relationship with your mom), obey her!
- There is no greater gift that you could ever give your mother for Mother’s Day above love, respect, and obedience.
- Choose to honor God in your obedience to your mother. You will experience blessing because of it!
- Application: Obey your mother!
Call: How do we respond to the message?
- Altar moment: Pause to think about your relationship with your mother. We understand not every relationship is perfect, but pray and ask: “God, how can I honor my mother this week?” Choose to honor God in obedience to your mom!
- Small Group Questions:
- Share a story about your mom (or someone you view as a mom) that impacted you spiritually.
- Why are mothers so important to us? Why are mothers important in our spiritual lives?
- What does it mean to “never forget your mother’s instruction?”
- How can you practically obey your mother this week?
