Lesson Overview: God is the ultimate Creator. He created the world and everything in it — including us. Of all creation, God calls us His masterpiece. This Youth Group Lesson unpacks the creation story in Genesis 1 and how the creation of the world lead to God’s greatest creation of all — you and me.

Bible: Genesis 1:1; Genesis 1:2-31; Ephesians 2:10

Bottom Line: God created the universe, and He created you.

Capture: Grab their attention with an illustration.

  • Story: Have you ever created something you were really proud of? Tell a story about something you spent a lot of time to create. Maybe it was a school project, something you built, or a home improvement project. Go into detail about how hard you worked on it and how the thing you built was your prize possession. Keep it lighthearted and fun!

  • God is a creator, too! Tonight we’re going to talk about how God created the world and why creation matters to Him so much!

Connect: Connect them to God’s word.
  • Question: When you think about God, what do you think about? Do you think of Him as a friend? A father? A king? A creator? After tonight, you are going to view God as the ultimate Creator!

  • Scripture: Genesis 1:1 — The first verse of the entire Bible tells us that God is a creator! This is how God introduces Himself to us — as the Creator of all.

Consider: What does this mean for us today?
  • Scripture: Genesis 1:2-31 — Read through or paraphrase the creation story. Walk your students through the story day by day and discuss the purpose of each day of Creation.

  • Wow! In the first chapter of Scripture in our Bibles, we see how God created the Heavens, Earth, and everything in them! He thought of every detail. There’s not a single thing in the entire universe that wasn’t created by God.

  • God didn’t need to create the world; He did so to put His glory on display for all to see. Every time we look at Creation, we can see how beautiful, big and glorious God is!

  • God not only created the Heavens, Earth, sky, sea, and creatures, He created human beings, too!

  • Man and woman were the only part of God’s creation that were made in His image.

  • Bottom Line: God created the universe, and He created you.

Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?
  • Scripture: Ephesians 2:10 — Out of everything that God created, He calls you His masterpiece!

  • Think about some part of creation that you think is cooler or more beautiful than anything else. Maybe it’s the ocean, or the sunrise, or the mountains. God created all those things to display His glory, but He doesn’t look at those things and declare them His masterpiece. It’s when He looks at you that He’s the most proud of His creation.

  • Story: Share about the time you realized that you were the Creator’s ultimate masterpiece. How did that affect the way you viewed yourself?

  • The true role of creation is to display the glory of the Creator. That means your life should display God’s glory.

  • Application: Choose to live in such a way that your life brings God glory!

Call: How do we respond to the message?
  • Altar moment: Tonight, I want to give you the opportunity to discover God’s heart for you as His creation. Take a moment and ask Him, “What was going through your mind when you created me? For what purpose did you create me?” God’s Word says He created us for good works that He prepared for us in advance. Tonight I believe He wants to reveal to you what some of those good works are!

  • Small Group Questions:

    1. Have you ever created something you were really proud of? Tell us about it.

    2. What is your favorite thing that God created? Why?

    3. Why do you think God created us in His image?

    4. What would it look like to live in such a way that our lives bring glory to God?
