Lesson Overview

•God has made us all in His image. We are uniquely created by Him and for Him. Being unique, however, doesn’t always feel like a positive thing to teenagers today! This youth group lesson is meant to encourage students to lean into their unique identity as men and women made in God’s image!

Breakdown

•Main Scripture: Colossians 1:15; John 1:1-5; Ephesians 2:10
•Bottom Line: God made you in His image.

Capture: Grab their attention with an illustration.

•Illustration/Story: Share a story about a time where you stood out in the crowd, but not in a positive way. Illustrate how being “different” can sometimes ruffle feathers in others and cause us to feel embarrassed.

•While it may be scary at times, being unique is such a good thing! Think about how much flavor we have in life with things that are unique compared to what’s bland. Use a variety of food examples to illustrate how being unique is a gift from God.

Connect: Connect them to God’s word.

•Tension Question: Are you unique? Do you see this as a good thing or a bad thing? Your uniqueness is God’s design and a part of what makes you beautiful in God’s eyes. He made you uniquely!
•Scripture: Colossians 1:15 — You were made in God’s image, which translates to “an exact representation and revelation.” You bear the mark of God!

Consider: What does this mean for us today?

•Scripture: John 1:1-5 — Scripture says that all things were made through Him. You were made in his image, created by God and through God.
•Since you were created in His image, let your life as a Christian reflect it! Often, we find ourselves imitating the image of the world. This produces a lifeless future.
•Imitating Christ produces true life. Imitating what we see on social media and in pop culture will always leave us disappointed.
•You are more than an imitation of the world. You are more than the things you consume around you. You have an identity — a unique calling as a son or daughter of Christ. You have a purpose, identity, and a future in Jesus Christ!
•Bottom Line: God made you in His image.

Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?

•Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:1 — If you were made in God’s image, we need to reflect Him. The hard question we have to ask ourselves is, “Who or what are you imitating?”
•Are you imitating the world and letting your identity be found in it, or through Scripture and God’s presence?•Imitate Jesus in how you talk, walk, and live your daily life. Spend time with Him to reflect His unique image in your own life.
•Application: Imitate Jesus!

Call: How do we respond to the message?

•Altar moment: If you have been imitating the things of the world, it’s time to come to the altar and commit to reflecting the image of God. Pray and ask God for the strength and the clarity to begin living a life that displays the image of God in your life!

•Small Group Questions:
1. How is being unique a good thing? How can it feel like a bad thing?
2. Do you feel unique? Why or why not?
3. How does being made in God’s image impact our lives as Christians?
4. What does it mean to imitate Jesus practically? How can you put this into practice this week?.
