YOUTH GROUP LESSON ON AFTER CAMP

YOUTH GROUP LESSON ON AFTER CAMP

YOUTH GROUP LESSON ON AFTER CAMP

Lesson Overview

  • Coming home from a camp experience can come with a variety of emotions. We feel excited after all that God has done but also a little worried about falling back into old patterns. This is why a strong word on consistency and spiritual discipline, specifically in God’s word, is so critical for this time!

Breakdown

  • Main Scripture: Matthew 6:6; Romans 10:17 (ESV); James 4:7-8a
  • Bottom Line: Stay consistent in God’s word.

Capture:
Grab their attention with an illustration.

  • Illustration/Story: Share a story about personal discipline. Discipline can be really hard! For some, it comes easy, but for others, it feels impossible! Does anyone else feel like this when it’s time to practice for band or sports or even while doing homework or chores? We can all relate to this feeling, especially after camp.
  • Maybe you surrendered to God and experienced His presence in a deep way, but struggle not to fall back into your old habits now that you’re back home! If we don’t learn discipline, our spiritual lives can begin to fall apart and we fall right back into the same distractions we left behind at camp. This begins with God’s word!

Connect: Connect them to God’s word.

  • Tension Question: Do you ever struggle to practice the discipline of reading God’s word? Maybe you struggle to understand it or don’t know where to start. Wherever you’re at, God wants to meet with you and reveal Himself to you through His word!
  • Scripture: Matthew 6:6 — Going away to meet with God “in the secret place” can feel difficult. It’s hard to find the time and space to practice this discipline!

Consider: What does this mean for us today?

  • Scripture: Romans 10:17 (ESV) — This specific translation uses a specific phrase worth highlighting: hearing comes from “The word of Christ.”
  • We need to hear and read Scripture daily. This is the most important way that God speaks to us as His children!
  • What many call “having a quiet time” is no easy feat! Discipline and consistency aren’t easy, but they are incredibly important.
  • Illustration: Use a sports icon as an illustration. No good athlete achieves greatness by occasionally showing up for practice. On the contrary, they eat, breathe, and LIVE their sport!
  • When we prioritize consistency in our meeting with God, we learn how to truly walk with God. Pursue God’s word as you return from camp to see your faith grow!
  • Bottom Line: Stay consistent in God’s word.

Collide: How do we apply this in our lives?

  • Scripture: James 4:7-8a — Scripture promises us that God draws near to us when we prioritize drawing near to Him. This is why it’s important to prioritize time in His word!
  • An easy way to remember and practice the discipline of a quiet time is to find a slot and a spot. A slot is a time when you meet with God, and a spot is a place where you meet Him!
  • When you schedule your time and find your place to meet with the Lord, the discipline comes much more naturally.
  • If you find yourself discouraged that you don’t feel like you did at camp, recognize that there is nothing “magical” about camp — you just set aside distractions to meet with God intimately for a week, and His presence is available to you here like it was at camp! Meet with God through His word!
  • Application: Find a slot and a spot to meet with God.

Call: How do we respond to the message?

  • Altar moment: Protect all that God did through your camp experience by walking in spiritual discipline and consistency through God’s word!

  • Small Group Questions:
  1. Why is discipline (spiritual or not) difficult for us?
  2. Is it difficult for you to spend time in God’s word? Why or why not?
  3. What helps you stay consistent in God’s word each week
  4. Share you slot and spot that you can commit to meeting God in this week!
